A Guide on Logbook Servicing

Posted on

Logbook servicing is an essential component of vehicle servicing and preventive maintenance. Most car owners will confuse logbook servicing with conventional vehicle service. Below is a comprehensive excerpt on logbook servicing.

What Is Logbook Servicing?

A vehicle logbook is a document detailing how and when you should maintain and service your vehicle. For example, the mileage at which you should replace internal engine components. Logbook services are a long-term approach to keeping your vehicle in excellent condition. For instance, while you are required to service your vehicle very 5,000–10,000 kilometres, your manufacturer will recommend a logbook service every 20,000–30,000 kilometres.

If you purchase a new vehicle, logbook servicing is a critical aspect of retaining your vehicle warranty. Typically, the manufacturer expects you to conduct logbook servicing to prevent catastrophic problems such as a damaged engine or transmission system. Your mechanic should stamp the logbook after every service. In most cases, your warranty becomes void if you do not comply with the logbook servicing schedule.

What Does Logbook Servicing Entail?

During standard service, the mechanic will replace the engine oil, oil filter and air filter. A logbook service goes into much more detail. It entails:

  • An inspection and replacement of ignition components such as the fuel injectors and the spark plugs. You may also have to clean the fuel lines.
  • Brake servicing such as replacing the pads and rotors, flushing the brake fluid and bleeding the brake lines.
  • Your mechanic will clean transmission components such as the oil cooler, filter and oil pan. Besides, you may have to replace the transmission oil, gaskets and seals.
  • The mechanic will examine the vehicle's ECU to detect electrical problems and failing sensors.

Ideally, your mechanic should use genuine OEM parts when conducting a logbook service. OEM parts are manufacturer tested. They are easy to fit, durable and do not affect the functionality of other parts.

Conducting a Logbook Service

If your vehicle is under manufacturer warranty, check whether the manufacturer has any specifications regarding how you should conduct a logbook service. For example, if you own a high-end car, the manufacturer could compel you to conduct logbook servicing at an accredited garage. Logbook servicing should be conducted by experienced and specialised mechanics. Remember, the service entails detailed inspections which involve opening the engine and transmission.

Car owners should observe their logbook servicing schedule. It ensures your vehicle does not run on worn-out parts. Besides, a stamped logbook is a guarantee that you take good care of your car. As such, it is a sure way to improve the value of your vehicle.
